This high school curriculum introduces students to oral and written Spanish language skills, enabling them to carry on basic conversation in that language. The program emphasizes communicating an idea and the vocabulary and structure relate to the students’ daily lives. The students learn to comprehend and express in Spanish familiar life experiences, to read about these common events in Spanish, and to write about them in simple Spanish sentences. Students are considered for Spanish II in High School after successfully completing this course.
Art students explore a variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media such as pencil and charcoal drawing, watercolors, paper Mache, sculpting and pottery, textile weaving, and mask making.
This course covers the basic techniques of acting, oral interpretation and public speaking. Students learn about character development using theatre games, improvisation, pantomime, puppetry, and storytelling. Students will be taught public speaking skills.
Students learn music theory. Sight-reading and ear training are taught to assist students as they learn to sing during the Mass and perform. Students also learn to play instruments including the harmonica, guitar, bells, and keyboard.
Art History aims to open the students’ minds to help them appreciate the great works of art in all its forms. This course helps to prepare the students for the high school art elective. While the curriculum covers the history of painting, sculpture and architecture from pre-historic times to today, it emphasizes European paintings and architecture of the Renaissance periods as well as the Church and the art it has inspired.
This course helps to develop writing and communication skills. Students learn the discipline of meeting deadlines and practice working independently to gather information and create articles that are interesting, creative, and informative. Journalism students produce several school newspapers during the school year. This class may also help put the yearbook together.
